"I am going to draw up a hypothesis concerning the role of religion in Denmark nowadays. Denmark has turned into a country of atheists. The majority of the Danish population is enrolled as members of this national church. It is remarkable that when baptized one is a member – is has been a tendency that children are baptized shortly after they are born and isn’t that notable? Yes, I believe so. Even though ones parents are religious it is not certain that the child is. Many parents do not give their children a chance to face religion on their own. How many one-year-olds are capable of making a choice of religion? None. In my opinion it is irresponsible that we are letting parents choose faith of their children. We are giving mixed signals and gradually the church is taking for granted. I believe that you as a member of the national church should have the Christen faith. Only a relatively small part of the population is truly dedicated to the Christen faith and even though 83% of the population is members of Folkekirken. The remarkable issue is the frequency of church going as it is very low. In fact only 5% are going to church on a weekly basis. As I look upon it many Danes are only a part of the national church because they feel obligated to it and moreover because the membership gives the rights to a marriage in the church plus a burial at a cemetery. The church has turned into an organization that you ‘just’ are a part of - whether you belief in God is present or not.
My parents gave me a choice to whether I wanted to be a part of church. I was not baptized until shortly before my confirmation. If you ask the newly confirmed person he/she does not know what their belief is and you can hardly blame them. At the age of 13-14, who is able to take a decision about anything? Why not wait until the child is come of age? At the age of 18 you are given the authority to vote at the election, take driving lections – it would make much more sense if the confirmation of your baptism was at this age.
To sum up I believe that my hypothesis is correct. The role of religion is relatively small and Denmark is not a religious country and– I think we are just the opposite, a country of atheists."
