Buster Keaton

Like many other silent filmstars the comedian Buster Keaton had to face reality, the public had forgotten him after many years of fame. But after thirty years with smaller roles and a lot of booze he became very popular again. In the fifties they began using pieces from his old movies in the television, and it quickly appeared that his inscrutable face could make the audience to –flække af grin-, exactly like his days of glory in the twenties.
A reviewer writes “He was the only bigger comedian who never showed feelings in his films, but his big expressionless face evoked the most different effects.” This ability, to be conscious to underact his role, Keaton had developed in his younger years on the variety, where one of his most famous tricks was to be hit in his head with a broom. After standing motionless and expressionless for several seconds he only said one single word “ouch”.
Keaton’s poker face or stone face, as it is also called, was his trademark. Only once he was tempt to smile in a movie and that was not a good idea.
“It really meant ruin. I lost all my money and that amount to, after what was ridden in the papers, to –rundt regnet- five million dollars. I should never had smiled. Very early in my career I found out that as soon as a comedian smiles on the stage the audience gets solemn. And the other way around: if the comedian is serious the audience is prepared to –skrige af grin-.
Wise by harm Buster Keaton did therefore not smile when a audience, who included many celebrities from the world of literature and film, gave him five minutes storm of applause after a showing of his film “The General” in Venice in 1965. He cried.
