An interesting finding is the “peach” in “Why I travel” by Mark Moxon. Mark visits his friend, who had just bought a new house. The bathroom in this house is filled with “peachy-things”, such as fluffy peach hand towels, a peach-coloured bath and peach soap. By mentioning the name of this juicy fruit he does not refer to precisely a peach. The “peach” is more a symbol of “the ordinary”. In this context the peach appears on something as unimpressive as a bathroom. I suppose that the first time he was introduced to a peach, it seemed exotic in a way. As time went by, the fascination and allure fainted. Now he only connects it with bathrooms. Mark did not wanted to live a life with a “peach” bathroom, so the only alternative for him was living as a backpacker.
Another symbol in terms of travelling is for example the mentioning of a “classroom” Don George does. He thinks that he had spent his whole life in a classroom and he had planned to spend the rest of his life in classrooms. And suddenly he realized that the term “classroom” had other meanings as well. After his ‘discovering’ of France, it was clear to him that the world was overflowing with new wisdom and impressions only waiting to be discovered by travellers.
