A Haunting Memory
In the last few years bullying has become a huge problem for many children, and therefore we need to talk about it in public, so kids and, not to forget, their parents will realize how big a problem it is to lots of young people. The Canadian short story ‘’A Haunting Memory’’, which is published in 1984, also discusses this issue and introduces us to the kids´ cruel world. But why have they created this brutal world and what is bullying in aid for?
Elizabeth, who´s the main character in the short story ‘’ a Haunting Memory ’’, tells us everything that has happened in her circle of friends, and in that way we gain an insight view into the children´s world. Elizabeth was one of them who teased Delia ´´ (…) because she was a chubby, diabetic child. ,, There is no doubt, why they choose to bully her. She was the easiest victim because of her looks. The most awfully thing is that she hasn’t decided herself to get all these flaws. Elizabeth expresses her hate and criticizes everything about Delia ‘’I even thought about the melons when I saw Delia because her head was so round and she seemed so bland and stupid and fruitlike.’’ She compares Delia with weird and evil stuff. But it is typical for young pupils to say such horrible things about each other in this age period. However, at the same time it is strange that Elizabeth is able to think in those terms. ‘’ She´s nobody special, she´s just a pain. She´s really dumb and she can´t do anything.’’ Elizabeth keeps mentioning terrible words about Delia, and the reason why is because Elizabeth in some point is afraid of the fact that she will be the next bully victim ‘’ I was kind of chunky and wore glasses too (…) sucked my thumb’’ Elizabeth is the perfect victim, in fact she is just like Delia, except that she doesn’t have diabetes. Nevertheless, Elizabeth knows the kids´ rules and therefore she takes advance of Delia´s miserable life to help her own bad self-confidence, because it will take the focus away from her by teasing Delia’’ (…)were it not for Delia I was next in line for humiliation.’’
As mentioned before Delia is the ideal victim, for young evil kids, because Delia displaces the fact that the other kids don’t want to play with her or even walk with her home. The walks home from school are very important elements in Elizabeth´s and Delia´s life, because it´s on one of these walks home Elizabeth stands up for Delia, when the other kids throw snowballs after her’’ You´d better stop’’ Elizabeth stands up for her, but only because her mother has threatened her with spanking, if her mother hadn’t told her too, she wouldn’t do it. This little sentence destroys Elizabeth´s plan about pushing the focus away from her appearance. This bully scenario turns whole Elizabeth´s live upside down, and her worst nightmare comes to reality. But whatever in some point things would change. The bully becomes the victim and vice versa that is a basic rule in the kids´ world. Elizabeth situation just confirms that the rule holds true. ´´Di-a-beet-ics and Suck-y-ba-bies can´t eat chocolate.’’ This quote is spoken by Sandra. Sandra is a rich big girl and the funny thing is that she doesn’t get teased either although she is heavy girl. Sandra uses the same technique as Elizabeth. They both have a tough surface but they are soft inside. Sandra uses her parents´ economic position, whereas Elizabeth does it with bully. Children have a similar ranking system as Heals Angels. She is big but doesn’t get teased only because of the money her parents own. And it is the reason to Elizabeth realizes that she gets perceived as a part of Delia. They are now are a couple. Elizabeth can´t stand the thought of being but side by side with Delia, and therefore once again there happens a main situation at their walk home ‘’(…) I hate you! I could bash your head like a melon!’’Elizabeth lets all her frustrations be relieved, and she actually wants to kill Delia the same why her aunts died. Delia makes Elizabeth crazy, so it fits extremely well with the short story´s headline ‘’A Haunting Memory’’, because every time she thinks of Delia´s presence it brings her bad sides up. ‘’But, in all the years before she finally died at seventeen’’ the fact that she says finally died makes her seem as a mentally ill.
Nonetheless, the kids´ cruel world has a lot of rules and the children, who are bullies, are evil selfish people who don’t have any emotions. It´s hard to be a kid now days and so was it back in 1984 where Elizabeth was a kid. There is much reason why people choose to bull one. I might be a way to get attention from one´s classmates. Bully is still a serious problem and in the light of bullying some victims of bullying have attempted suicide rather than continue to endure such harassment and abuse. Other victims have taken out their anger in violence towards other students. These victims will never forgive, maybe they say they have but they just deny everything. The y will still be suffering from victimization.
