Why honey
?
Author: Raymond Carver
Year:1976”why honey” is from will you please be quiet, please?, which was first published in 1976. Raymond Carver was born in Clatskaine, Oregon in 1938. His father was a saw mill worker.  Typically if you read his other stories they have the same main problem: the cold relationship between 2 people, typically a man and woman. Carver’s stories are identical to each other because of same issue. People who is in relationship often is having secrets, distrust to each other and less contact to each other and the relationship is weak. Also in his stories appears the communication and the kindness is on a low level, even if the persons a physically near to each other. Even if they talked together, the conversation would be meaningless. A typical Raymond Carver story.
And now I will be analyzing Raymond  Carvers short story ”why honey.”:
The genre is short story, because of the short time, and the few persons mentioned in it. Theme is family-relationships.

Character sketch with analysis:
The mom seems to be very traditional and typical. The way she is describing her son at the beginning is ”a good boy” who had hard to tell the truth. The mom is patient and fair to her son. She is like any other mother in this world curious and suspicious when her son starts to hide things from her and keep secrets. The mom starts getting more suspicious when she finds a lot of blood on his T-shirt. She wants to have a nice conversation with him, but it turns to a bizarre moment, when the why, is answered by kneel. I think the moms overreacting. The mom is experiencing strange things like the phone calls and when she answer it, there is no one. Perhaps the mom has an illness, that make her imaging things that isn’t real, like: the phone ring, or the strange man who was watching her on the streets. But as she admitted she was an old woman now. I believe all of this is imaginations and the imaginations are driving her mad and are the reason for her fears. Even she moved away and changed her name she couldn’t escape the fears or the past. I think that Raymond Carver is trying to send us the secret message that is no escape from past.

At first the son is described as a 14 year old who where a good boy, but isn’t always telling the truth. He lied to his mother about his salary at Hartley’s. he also becomes a suspect for the murder of the cat, Trudy. As the story develops we notice that the lies get bigger and more unreliable. Because he is 14 we of course expect he is in the adolescence, which the typical behavior would be: develop his own personality, take care of himself, expect more privacy and etc. he is tired of his mother keep asking so many questions. And all the answers he gives his mother is lies. The mom gets mom suspicious and that makes the son leave her. At that point the son perhaps try to show that he can take care of himself. After he left his mother he graduated and had a speech for a big crowd. His mother was in that crowd. This shows that even if he didn’t had a mother push him to study, he could manage make a good speech and graduate by himself. He becomes very famous, when his mother started seeing him on tv and the newspapers. He never  had contact to his mother any more. I will compare this situation with a story written by John Cheever ”reunion.”
where the relationship splits between son and parent. In both cases the son chose not to reunion the parent, but the different is that in ”reunion” the father is uncontrollable and inpatient, when in ”why, honey,” it’s the son who is that. it’s a kind of parallel connection.
The mom write some letters to her son but not even a single one was replied. Shows that the son is trying to ”escape from past” but he cant and at last he sends his mother a letter that she is replying in the story.(maybe)

Narrator and point of view is from the mother’s side. The narrator is the letter it self, where the mother has written her own words. We only knows what she had on her mind when she wrote.  The narrator is a first person teller.

Conclusion :
Raymond Carver’s persons seems always like real persons. They don’t seem like fiction characters but more like some in true stories. In this story we see the weak relationship splits. The reason I suppose the issue is the communication and the missing father in the house.
Carver’s stories is typical a situation between two close people, often man and woman who are unreliable to each other, no trust, secrets and other problems that carver mixes in his stories. But the commonalities in his stories as I will conclude is :” no escape from the past.”
Like we see when the mom sends the letters to her son, and the son remembers her mother. And the mother who receives the letter which force to talk about her past.
