The theme in short story “Blink And You Miss It” is drugs, and how drugs can affect your life and your judgement. I will trough out my essay, try to make it clear what the reasons of drug abuse might be and why the I-person look up to the beach guru. Drugs can lead to a persons total perdition and cause one to lose your common sense. This is what happens in the short story “Blink And You Miss It”.
The short story “Blink And You Miss It” is told in the past tense by a first-person narrator, this is clear to see because the narrator speaks about himself as I and the story is told with the I-persons’ language. The focus of the text is based on the I-persons’ actions and thoughts. The story takes place in a seaside town in England, this is based on the I-persons refers to a beach and docks.
The main character of the story is the I-person. He is a young and naive man that might have started doing drugs as a teenager. He must be very alienated, because we do not hear about any family or friends. I get the impression that he has lots his common sense as a teenager: Five years old. Packed with common sense. Say, eight or nine years left to go before the common sense starts to desert him. Twelve years to go until he’s in an abject free-fall, if he’s anything like me. And he could well be. At five, I was certainly the kind of kid who looked both ways before crossing the road.” I-person utters this statement when he sees the neighbours kid, Sammy, crossing the street. According to this statement the I-person started loosing his common sense in his puberty. This is in fact quite normal. Puberty is characterized by the persons search for independence and the liberty of the individual. Furthermore it is also is characterized by the all the conflicts with the parents. I think that the I-persons has tried to distance himself from his parents and all the regulations by doing drugs. So, the drugs took away his common sense and replaced it with a false feeling of independence and joy. But in this particular decision, I would say that he forgot to look both ways before he crossed the road of self-determination. From here on he is in a free-fall, he is totally alienated by the world. And I think that in the middle of this free-fall he came across the beach guru. The beach guru can provide with drugs, booze, the false feeling of support and a person that he can identify himself with. I think the main reason why the I-person has joined the beach guru’s cult, is that he alone and he has realized that he cannot manage to be independent. In the cult he gets all the things he has been missing such as, friendship and a feeling of being appreciated. The result of his commitment to the cult is clearly seen in this quote: “I should have tapped on the driver’s window and told him to pull over. Got off the truck and walked home. And the idea did cross my mind, but at the same time I was imagining the reactions of everyone when I got back. So I kept my mouth shut.” Even though he knows it is wrong to buy drugs he keeps his mouth shut because he is afraid of the reactions of the others. This is a typical sign of group pressure, to be accepted in the group he has to gain their trust, so he decides to carry on.
Another important character is the beach guru. He is the man in charged of this cult. He is in his forties, has a receding hairline and an impressive knowledge of substances. He always wants to be in the centre of the cult-members attention: “ Centre of the organization, centre of the circle, the beach guru. He liked to get involved. He needed these young faces looking up at him….” This quotation shows that the beach guru has a lust for power and that he has brainwashed these people with drugs, so that they would worship him like some kind of “drug-god”. Additionally the beach guru is also sleeping with some of the members. This could be some kind of ritual, with the purpose of initiating the members in the cult. He is also a man with very good contacts, this express itself when the cult is in shortage of drugs and he contacts the chief of police to get some drugs. Furthermore he has a curtain power over the members. He demonstrates his power by the “Eeny meeny miny mo” this helps him choosing a member to assist him perform a task. This has a great impact on the members: “A sort of power thing, which we lapped up. Which of us was going to be the lucky boy or girl to help the guru achieve his aim.” I have the impression that the beach guru is intoxicated by drugs day and night. Just the way he speaks makes you think that he is a crack-head: “Uh-huh”. This seems to be his favourite expression.
The story’s ending is very interesting. The I-person realises that the beach guru is a prick and he tries to prevent the neighbours kid, Sammy, from doing the same mistakes as he did. He is doing this because he fells that he has wasted his life, and he does not want to see Sammy end up like him. He is trying to do this by sending Sammy cards about how to behave.
The title of the story “Blink And You Miss It” refers to the fact that it only takes one moment of inattention for something to happen. You have to be aware when you cross the street you never know what might happen if you do not look left and right. The I-person has clearly forgotten to look in both directions when he crossed the street in his age of puberty. Instead of doing the right thing, he choose to follow his lust for rebellion.
All in all drugs can changed your whole life. The I-person in this story ruinous his future by doing drugs. He tries to get his life back on the track by joining a cult, but this only makes him even more addicted to drugs. The fact that his drug abuse has distanced him from his family and friends, has contributed to his downfall and has made his connection with the beach guru even stronger.
The author, Alex Garland, messages with this text must be that doing drugs will not bring anything good to you.
