Engelsk stil!

The American Dream

The American Dream is a national ethos (set of fundamental moral values, that characterizes, in this case, a society) of the United States of America. The term “American dream” is used in many ways, but it essentially is an idea that suggests that anyone in the US can succeed through hard work and has the potential to lead a happy and successful life. The American Dream is also considered a symbol of liberty and equality. The American Dream is also about certain properties such as being able to create significant social relationships and contributing to society. Someone who manages to achieve his or her version of the American dream is often said to be “living the dream.’’

Some people claim that The American Dream is an unrealistic goal and therefore unreachable for some due to the structure of the liberal American society. There are many cases where a person is judged by their class, race, religion or ethnicity. We seem to forget to see the situation from a more critical perspective and are caught up in the imaginative dreaming. The American Dream is also quite materialistic.

I personally think that The American Dream is a myth by the capitalists, marketers, and politicians whose aim is to sell products or get votes. But I totally understand the actual concept. I agree that every person should have the confidence and self-discipline to reach their goals in life. I just don’t think this sort of ‘’dreaming’’ is the right way. At times I even see The American Dream as some type of propaganda.

The Danish Dream in general

One of the differences between Denmark and U.S.A. is that Denmark doesn’t have this kind of ‘’Dream Culture’’ that the Americans have. The Danes are more focused on being an equal, happy and social society, where everyone has the same opportunities. The Danish people are actually known worldwide for their happiness.  Most of the Danes dream of raising a family and live a satisfying life.

A good example of equality, in Denmark, is the Danish educational system. Danes don’t have to pay for university or college. This guarantees that any child or youth have the same chances of getting a proper, sufficient and adequate education.

But there is also something, which in my opinion is pretty bad. The Danes have a kind of concept called ‘’Janteloven.’’  This is two sentences from ‘’Janteloven’’: ‘’you better not think you’re better or smarter than us.’’ ‘’You shouldn’t think that you know more than us.’’ This can make people introverted, isolated and prevent them from doing what they want.

My Danish dream

You can’t really say that my dream is ‘’Danish’’ because it’s universal. I want to become a doctor. I love helping people and I think the human body is very fascinating. It’s a very challenging profession because of the medical diagnosis, where you have to indentify a disease or disorder.

There are some goals that I have in my life. Just call them dreams. First of all I want to be happy throughout my whole life. Second of all I want to fulfill my dream (becoming a doctor). Those are the goals I have in my life right now.
