Here we go:
Finders Keepers

A)
The boy Stewart likes to collect things from the litter. Everything he owns are defect in some way. His most beloved find is the dog Lassie, who keeps wandering off. One summer Lassie does not come home again so Stewart and his big brother sets out to find Lassie. As they search the fields and kilns nearby the brother are longing for the childish world of mystery that he has grown away from. He wants to be as credulous as Stewart is. One their path home the brother sees a naked body of a boy on Stewarts age. He tells Stewart that the boy only is hurt, and that he must run for help. So Stewart runs to nearest farm to phone the police.
Later on the big brother finds out that Lassie has been shot by a farmer, but he does not tell Stewart this. Instead Stewart gets a new dog at his next birthday and he never mention Lassie again. The big brother notices that Stewart has changed since the they found the dead boy. Stewart is now more watchful and he is no more a credulous little boy.

B)
Mankind has always been terrified by death. We cannot predict where or when we are going to face the grim death. But we must all face the Grim Reaper sooner or later. For some people, a meeting with their mortality can change them forever. This is also the case in the short story “Finders Keepers” where to boys are confronted with the mortality of man.
The short story “Finders Keepers” is told by a first-person narrator this is clearly seen as the narrator refers to himself as I. Furthermore it has to mentioned that the story takes place in the country. This is based on that we hear about farms, kilns and heaths- all things that have some connection to the country.
The main character in this short story is the I-person. He is very protective towards his little brother Stewart. This emerges clearly from the episode where he tries to keep Stewart distracted, so that he is not confronted with the dire car crash . The I-person likes to have some time to himself to reflect on life. But lately he has been feeling that he is losing something, he is not as credulous as he used to be. This could be a hint to that he has left childhood and reach adulthood. He fells that he has to step up and take some responsibility and protect his little brother from the world of chaos and death. One of the things that have opened the I-person eyes is his trips to Mr Bremner’s farm. When he goes there, he fells like he is crossing the border into limbo. The farm is a ruin and rats and crows are tied upside-down in the hedge. Nothing grows at this farm, we do not hear about any crops or living animals, it is a real land of the dead. Furthermore the kilns behind the farm are falling to pieces, the old food is filled with maggots and there are dead birds. These situations have confronted the I-person with death and its cruelty and made him realise that he is mortal. This may have been one of the things that made him leave childhood. This might also be one of the reasons why he reacts so calm when they discovers the dead boy. At this incident the I-person reveals that he do not believe in heaven, but he had imagined some kind of rebirth. From this it is clearly seen that he is not a Christian, he is more likely a Buddhist. This is based on that the idea of rebirth belongs to the Buddhist way of thinking. But it also shows that he can not let the idea of immortality go.
As I mentioned earlier the I-person tries to protect Stewart from grim world. When they discovers the dead boy the I-person tells Stewart that he is not dead, he has only been hurt .
Stewart is the total opposite of his brother. Stewart like to collect stuff from the litter and he loves his unpredictably dog. The fact that he likes the unpredictably dog says something about his age. I would say that Stewart is about 10 years old based on this. It is very typical for a boy in that age to collect old stuff and he might be a little unpredictable himself like the dog. But he also shows great affection for the dog, he is the only one who want to go out and find Lassie. But on his mission to find the dog, he is confronted with death even though his brother has tried to protect him from it. This makes Stewart realise that he might never see his beloved dog again and that a confrontation with the Grim Reaper has no age limit. Stewart has now come to understand that he is no immortal and this shock has changed Stewart view on life. Throughout the story Stewart has gone through a huge development. In the beginning he is a innocent naive boy, who collects odd stuff, but as the story develops he has to face mankind’s greatest fear, death. The encounter with death causes that Stewart’s protected world shatters. He is now aware of the fact that even though he is young he will never be safe, the Reaper is always lurking.
We all have an idea of what death is, but none of us know what it is for sure. When we are young we have this incredible idea that we are immortality, but as we grow up we learn that there is no such thing as immortality. This is also what Stewart realises in this short story. He childish believe of immortality splinters, when he sees that a boy on his age has been taken by the Grim Reaper. This leaves him with a whole new feeling, a feeling of fear. This is very normal, mankind has always had fear of the unknown.
