Hej:) er der en der er frisk på at kigge min stil igennem, tror og håber ikke der er så mange fejl:) Mvh.
Irregularities
The theme in this story is adultery. The story deals with the classic situation where a young woman falls in love with her boss. He only wants her for fun and she takes it more seriously. She is young and inexperienced and he is older, matured and powerful.
The narrator of the story is a woman who thinks that she is caring a baby. She might be in the middle of the twenties as she has not got a husband or any children “And for the first time I will see myself as a mother”( p. 4, l. 4). The narrator works for James Soleander as an administrative assistant of the cardiac care unit. James Soleander is the one, who she is having an affair with and also the one, who she has got pregnant with, by accident “He is the one who puts it their. But he’s always forgetting where he put the pen when it’s tucked behind his ear or where he has laid his beeper though it s usually clipped to the belt holding up his slacks. So I can see how it happened. And I haven’t told him jet.”( p. 1, l. 11-13).
The narrator is an unsecured young women, she is a bit of a dreamer. During the story she compares herself with the women in the magazines, she sees them as her roll model.
Another roll model is her sister which also is mention several times during the story. Her sister plays an important role in her life, as she has all the things she dreams about “And she has everything” (p 2 l. ) Therefore she also dreams about her arranging her marriage with Dr. Soleander. The contra dictionary thing is that she dreams about being marriage to Dr. Soleander; however she at the same time sees Dr. Soleander’s wife as perfect” His wife is beautiful and sweet, well groomed, charming at parties.” (p.3,l. 10-11). It is therefore also a dream that Dr. Soleander “the perfect man” with “the perfect women” wants to have an affaire with her.
She directly compares her sister with Dr. Soleander’s wife “She and my older sister had the same wave”(p. 3, l. 9) and in that way she can justify that she and her family are equal to Dr. Soleander’s wife.
A clear indication of her lack of self confidence is that she does not tell Dr. Soleander about her being pregnant with their baby.
Dr. Soleander is in contrast to her a strong and self-confident person, and this gives him a reason to dominate her. He is the man who has everything, the perfect wife, the boss and all the material things “….he just winks and walks back down the hall to an office which is furnished better than my apartment, to his closet full of cashmere. (p. 2, l. 35). He is not a man with many feelings. He uses the women around him and he is unfaithful to his own wife. He uses his position to get in contact with many women. Fore sample he takes another woman when the narrator becomes pregnant and louses her baby. He treats the women around him as if they were a thing. This is also the reason why their relationship develops as it does. In the beginning it is without commitments, where he is satisfied and she dreams about a long standing relationship with marriage and children. When it becomes seriously and he finds out that she is pregnant he ends their relationship.
The story develops around an irrelevant theme, namely onions. Her problems with eating onions are used to carry the story about her pregnancy. The story about her pregnancy leads us to the main theme of the story; her relationship with Dr. Soleander. In addition there are two side images, which are used to describe her relationship to Dr. Soleander. His cashmere clothe, which symbolises his position and for her it symbolises him as a person. The other thing is her heart problem relating to him as a heart doctor and symbolises her love for him.
The narrator sees their relationship as different from “the typical boss/secretary – ahem, Administrative Assistant-affair you might see on a soap opera.” (p.3, l. 1-2) But as the story develops it becomes clear that this is exactly what it is!
