ASPECTS OF AMERICAN SOCIOTY
The Trench coat Mafia
Who were they, what happened and why did they do it?

Dylan Klebold, 17 years. Eric Harris, 18 years.

On April 20th, 1999 it all collapsed. The two young teenage boys arrived to the school, dressed in long, black trench coats, around 11 a.m. The boys’ names were Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. The two students opened first fire outside the school next to the library. They then proceeded to the school library. In the library the boys started shooting around them. Of the around thirty student there were in the library, a dozen of them were then killed with cold blood. The boys escaped from the school but ended up killing them self, before anyone could capture them. The shooters were believed dead in the library, around 12 a.m. Fourteen students, including the shooters themselves, and one teacher, died during the attack. 28 others were seriously injured. It was the worst school shooting in the United States’ history.

The young boys were said to be members of an outcast group known as The Trench Coat Mafia. The group consisted of a dozen high school boys, who often wore dark trench coats and had German slogans and swastikas on their clothes. Under the murdering a girl heard one of the boys say to a black kid “I don’t like niggers” whereupon he shot the black kid in the face. The surviving victims tell us how they could hear the two boys hooting and laughing. The boys enjoyed it. Different students heard the boys say things like “This is revenge!”, I'm doing this because people made fun of me last year” and “it's revenge time on jocks for making us outcasts”. Most of the murders looked like executions. Student’s who was hiding under the desks was shot in the head. The bodies lay as like they had been trying to crawl away. After the shooters had killed themselves the police could not immediately remove the bodies of the killed student’s, because bombs were placed near the bodies and all over the school. They were left behind of the shooters, Eric and Dylan. Bombs were still exploding at 10:45 p. m.

Students have looked back on how they experienced the boys. A girl once asked if they were Nazis and the boys would say “Yeah, Heil Hitler”, but the girl never found out if they were joking. Other students tell us about the classes they had with the two boys. E.g. in a creative-writing class. The two young boys always wrote about death. On the schools bathroom walls you could read things like “Columbine will explode some day”, “all jocks must die”, “kill all athletes”. And there would be pictures of guns and swastikas. We know for a fact that the killing was well planned. They had collected guns, pipe bombs and thought their plan through. Later in a diary it was read that if they could have gotten away they would have gone to Mexico or some place ells. And if they couldn’t they would kill themselves. And so they did.

Partial chronology of tragedy

A trench coat is long coat which was worn by the British and the French soldiers in World War I. It was also used under the Second World War. The trench coat became a fashionable trend over the years, which still exist. The trench coat can give different kinds of impression. It has been used by different kinds of fictional heroes. For example cartoons figure as The Phantom. Black leather trench coats were also used by Nazis. Mostly just for inspiring fear and respect. The Trench Coat Mafia, which was blamed for The Columbine High School Massacre, wore black trench coats as a symbol of their strength of unity. After the incident in Columbine several high schools went that far to ban pupils from wearing trench coats. In recent years school uniforms have become more common in public schools in America. This prevents gangs in using their symbols. That is why it is now less attractive to be a gang member.

Then we can ask us self a bunch of questions. But the biggest question is: Who is to blame? Parents all over America started blaming music, videogames and television. Great artists as Eminem and Marilyn Manson have been the main target. Music like Heavy metal has been called suicidal.

Here there are some comments from Marilyn Manson.
"If you want to blame music for someone hurting themselves, then you can just as easily blame Shakespeare writing "Romeo & Juliet" which is something I was taught when I was a kid, and that's a story about two teenagers that killed themselves because their parents don't understand them and I think the key lesson is that parents don't understand their kids."
Marilyn Manson, 1997.

“…The first people on earth needed no books, movies, games or music to inspire cold-blooded murder. The day Cain bashed his brother Abel’s brains in, the only motivation he needed was his own human disposition to violence…”

“…When it comes down to who’s to blame for the high school murders in Littleton, Colorado, throw a rock and you’ll hit someone’s who’s guilty. We’re the people who sit back and tolerate children owning guns, and we’re the ones who tune in the up-to-the-minute details of what they do with them…”
Marilyn Manson, 1999.

I agree with Marilyn Manson. I admire him and I think he has some great point of views. We cannot say that it’s the media’s fault or that it’s the parents. Because I really believe that everyone is to blame. I believe the media have too much focus on the bad things. I believe parents and authorities are too soft and that young children’s minds still needs restrictions and I believe that no child should be allowed any kind of access to firearms of any kind.
