English essay - Julie and Debbie
In this essay I will write about the story we read in the class in the past weeks named Debbie and Julie. My essay will include the following topics: a very short summary of the story, a characterization of Julie and Debbie, their relationship, Julie’s parents, the theme(s), and the way the story is written. Furthermore I will try to make an conclusion of how I think the story is and what the narrator tries to tell us with it.
Debbie is the woman whom Julie seeks refuge in when she flees from her parents. Debbie lives in a flat which she has fought a lot for to be hers. In this flat many strange men come and go. These men seem to be drug dealers and seeking for prostitutes, probably Debbie. Some of the men even look frightening, but they can never touch Julie because Debbie protects her. This shows us that Debbie must be a strong woman, mentally as well as physically when she is able to keep all these men away from Julie. However we can read about something in the text which contradicts this theory. This is when we read about Debbie being afraid of darkness and where she even have to ask Julie to spent the night in her bed sometimes. This shows us the fact that Debbie must show that she is strong in front of the men, but in reality she is not. From this we can see the settings she lives in, and what she has to get through every single day. Regarding her looks we know from Julie’s explanation that she is a big girl but still handsome. Julie also tells us about Debbie’s hair being black, shiny and straight and her skin being white. However thing that I think tells us most about Debbie is her motto: ”Take what you want and don’t pay for it” quote page 3 at the bottom. This shows us the way Debbie thinks about life and how one should approach it. It seems like she is the sort of person who dos not think about the consequences of her actions.
Julie is the main person in the story. She has become pregnant and when it starts to show she flees from home. This is because she is afraid of her father. She stays whit Debbie for a while and then gives birth to her child in a shed with only a dog to accompany her. I think that Julie never became a prostitute although she stayed with Debbie who definitely was a prostitute. This opinion is based on the sentence from the story: ”But none threatening her, Julie, because Debbie looked after her.” quote page 1 at the bottom. Even though Julie leaves her child to strangers to look after her, I do not think that she is extremely irresponsible. I am able to conclude this after knowing that she did not leave her child before she was sure that it was safe. Julie is happy to stay with Debbie. She likes the fact that Debbie and the other persons in the flat are openhearted, meaning that they do not oppress their feelings by being silent and sad. they shout, kiss, weep, laugh etc. which contradicts the situation in Julies own home, where her mother and father don’t do these things.
By reading the text, we know that the relationship between Julie and Debbie is very close. As I mentioned, they even sleep in the same bed from time to time. The fact that Debbie took Julie in to her home when Julie had no place to go, shows us that they must have build up a strong relationship from the very beginning. We also know that Julie is angry whit Debbie because she left her and did not come back at the appointed time. But she still do love Debbie and at the end of the story, mentions Debbie while hugging her panda in a sort of way that many young girls mention their own mother, so this might show us that Debbie is like a mother or a bigger sister to Julie.
Julie's parents are the exact opposite of the people we meet at Debbie's. They are very careful not to shout or show their feelings and their life seems to be very scheduled and extremely boring. It seems like they do not have a bigger meaning with their life. It seems like the goal for the day is to wake up and do the exact same things as in the day before just like robots. The most unusual thing about this marriage is that they never touch each other or even sleep in the same bed. I get the impression that Julie’s father is controlled by her mother and that she is very harsh. This may have affected Julie so that she will do anything not to become like them when she becomes older. She may have become a rebellion to her parents and this might be the reason for why she feels uncomfortable to tell them anything, in contrast to Debbie, whom she tells everything.
I think that the theme of the story is ”teenage pregnancy and the consequences of it.”
This is concluded by knowing the fact that all of these events never would have happened if Julie did not become pregnant. She would not have to flee from home and seek refuge with Debbie and she would not have to go through the terrible experience by giving birth to a child in a dirty shed. Another important theme could be ”the importance of good relationship” because this specific issue is mentioned a lot in the story and is mentioned as being a very important ingredient to a happy life. For example the way Julie’s parents have build up their bad relationship and how it is affecting their life.
To explain why the narrator writes a story like this, I will try briefly to give a biography of her, which possibly could help us understand her. She was born in Persia, but both of her parents where English. She did spend most of her childhood in Africa, where she had a very harsh life and I do not believe that her parents took care of her, which may be the reason for why she is making the parents in this appear as people who does not really take care of their child. The genre of the story is drama. I base this on the fact that the story is interesting and new things keep happening. The story is written in a daily day language which make the young people able to identify them self with Julie and her problems.
As a conclusion I will sum up the story as being a great story about a growing problem in many countries. This problem is that many girls now a days become pregnant at a very young age which change their life dramatically. This story tell us about the problems which can occur if you become pregnant as a teenager and the narrator try to tell the teenagers to think about what they are doing one extra time!
