1. Characterize Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde
Dr. Jekyll is the main character of this novel. He is a very respectful Doctor who’s well known from his experiments with the human personalities. In the city, people see Henry Jekyll as a gentleman and as a friendly person. But Dr. Jekyll is a super selfish person and that is the reason why he locks himself in to his laboratory so that he can explore the possibilities with separation of the personalities. Dr. Jekyll is controlled by his passion for research. He makes a giant progress within science when he manage to separate his double personality in to two different humanbiengs.
Mr. Hyde is bestial murderer who is controlled by his lusts. His full name is Edward Hyde. Violence is a considerable part of Hyde’s pleasurable corruption.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is like good and evil. I consider them like night and day. The reason that I say that they are like night and day is because that Dr. Jekyll is Dr. Jekyll during the day and transforms in to Mr. Hyde at night. In the Freud-model, Dr. Jekyll is the Superego and Mr. Hyde is the ID. Dr. Jekyll isn’t exactly what most people would consider handsome by compared to Mr. Hyde those to are like beauty and ugliness.
2. Comment on this quotation:
“It would have been too much for Victorian tastes, and, one imagines, for Stevenson too, if Jekyll were to have survived to continue his dissolute life”.
If Dr. Jekyll would have survived his suicide attempt he had continued to live a miserable life. And as we see in the book Mr. Hyde becomes a bigger and bigger part of Dr. Jekyll and in the end Mr. Hyde takes over Dr. Jekyll body. If it haven’t been for Dr. Jekyll’s last powers Mr. Hyde would have taken over his body and Mr. Hyde would have kept on terrorising the city. People in the city would might have wondered were the good Dr. Jekyll had gone too and why evil Mr. Hyde had taken over the city. Mr. Hyde would kill all his relatives and in the end he would end up with nothing. That is really what all Dr. Jekyll’s research would winded up in; Nothing. All the time in his lab would have meant nothing because he couldn’t control his transformations and that is also why he forever must live with being the evil part of himself; Mr. Hyde. And that was not really what Dr. Jekyll had in mind when he started experimenting with personality-transformations. He tried to do the impossible and he only succeeded halfway through. So this is another great example of why Murphy’s law is so brilliant. Murphy’s law says: What can go wrong will go wrong, it’s just a matter of time. And in this case we must say it went terrible wrong which we all expected when Dr. Jekyll started his experiments.
