GAVIN
In my opinion could the theme of this story be jealousy in the way that Gavin in the whole story fight for his mother’s attention. He is jealous on his sister because the mother spent more time with her in the holidays than with him. He has a feeling of that his sister has stolen their mummy from him. Gavin begins to dream evil dreams about his father and sister, Gavin found out that his mother has an affair but he don’t won’t to tell his father about it maybe because he can use it against her later, so she will spend more time with him.
Does Gavin tell his father about the affair? We don’t know, but it cut be a change for him to get the father out of the picture and in that way become more time with his mother.
The story takes place somewhere in South Africa. Gavin’s family has moved from England to South Africa where the family is a part of the upper class. The story is written from Gavin’s angle witch we for example can see where the writer going in to Gavin’s heard and shows us what is going on in his mind. In the whole story the writer make sure that we know what Gavin thinks. So the main character must be an omniscient narrator.
Gavin is the protagonist in the story. He is a twelve year old boy who is thin and with unusually thick eyebrows. The eyebrows made him seem older than he is. Sometimes he goes out and kills lizards with his friends. Gavin has an older sister named Amanda she is at boarding school in England. Gavin had loves his sister but after her fifteenth birthday she was going to be another person he think. Last Christmas when she was home for holiday had she hardly played with Gavin she had going shopping with the mother instead. Gavin and his father was not a part of this so Gavin was beginning to hate his sister and has some evil dreams about her. In one of the dreams also the father was include. In the dream the father and the sister died in a car crash so Gavin and his mother was back alone and his mother never remarried. They moved back to England and Gavin keep his mother for him self.
Gavin’s mother is a beautiful woman with short thick shinning reddish brown hair. She doesn’t give Gavin so much attention and when Gavin is out with his friends and kills lizards he found out that his mother has an affair. The father is a tall man with sparse black hair and he is a professor in the chemistry department. He works a lot and don’t have so much time to Gavin.
Gavin feels that his relationship, with the mother fade out he feels strange and uneasy about her. He gets not the same attention from her any more but it can hang together with that his mother has this affair. Also his attention from his sister is not the same and the father just works so Gavin doesn’t get all this attention that he needs and it could maybe be one of the reason for way he has some evil dreams about the father and the sister and the reason for way it is the mother who is not die in his dream could be that Gavin is a little bit mother-sick or it could be that he has an Oedipus to his mother but when you have that you hate your father but Gavin doesn’t hate his father “- he just gets angry with him sometimes.” It is more the problem with the attention.
In the story we hear a lot about the lizards and maybe they symbolise Gavin’s interior anger. Gavin has so much anger in him self because he feels failed and that is why he kills lizards. He kills lizards to get some more attention. An example where Gavin not get his mothers attention is “oh. Well, I’m going out too.” No reaction and so Gavin says “I’m going with Laurence and David. To kills lizards” clearly to get some attention.
In that moment where Gavin is on the way back home after he has kills lizards and see his mother with a stranger and his mother has drop her sunglasses Gavin thinks he has some kind of power he has the control now. He knows her secret and maybe he can spent more time with her if he tell her that he knows that she has an affair. This control do that he doesn’t kills the big lizard at the end of the story.
