Har virkelig brug for, at få tjekket denne stil igennem:
Hvis ikke det hele, måske lidt af det. tak.
The Joke is about an unhappy man, living in a dead marriage. The story describes very clearly the husband’s feelings of powerlessness and frustration. Frustrations because he’s living in this dead marriage and dont know what to do about it. He fells ignored and alone. – He helps a lot with things; he brings his mother-in-law home from bingo, and favors like that. Errands of mercy, his wife calls them. And he likes it. But it strikes him very hard, that they never ask him, they just expect him to do it.
The spark in the relationship is missing, but he still loves her and he doesn’t want to leave her, - He is afraid that she wouldn’t care if he did. In all these bad thoughts, he rebembers the life they once had. When they kissed in shower, and lauhged with each other in everyday life. He misses that. He used to tell her jokes, and make her smile. While he’s listening to her phone call in the kitchen, he decides to tell her a joke. Just like old times. But he can’t. He knows that the wife would see right through his joke. – The story ends with the man facing his wife in the kitchen door, just without saying anything.
The protagonist in the story is the husband, a very depressed man. The relationship between the husband and the wife develops in the wrong direction, seen from the husbands’ point of view, but he doesn’t like to face it. He knows that something is wrong, and he really tries to break the silence with a joke, but he can’t. He fells alone, nobody ever ask him how he’s doing, and he’s taken for granted. I’m sure that the last years of their marriage has been terrible for both of them, but the husband has just realized it, and that drives him crazy. The protagonist really wants to save this marriage, but he can’t do it by himself.
The title “The Joke” can refer to different subjects. Maybe it just refers to the joke the protagonist wants to tell in the end of the story. But it could also refer to the man himself. Maybe he sees him self as a little person, kind of slave, who does what everybody tell him to do, and all these favors become his only passion in life; his life is one big joke.
But the marriage could have something to do with the title too. The fact that there’s no chemistry between the husband and his wife, but they are still married is a big joke. So as I said, the title can refer to a lot of subjects.
