This Is My Living Room
(Tom Mcafee)

Violence has become a new problem in the world today – especially in America, where nearly 1100 people die a year caused by violence - mostly involving guns. In the USA almost every citizen owns a weapon (gun), because they do not trust the police and so they feel that every man has to protect him self from what the future might hold. It is almost unbelievable to discover how much the Americans fear the future and how much this fear has an effect on their lives.
The novel “This Is My Living Room” is a very good example of what you could call today a “typical American”, whose verse fear is the future and the world, which are both cable of taking everything away from him – and for that reason he owns a gun to protect him from this fear.
In the short story, which takes place in a small town called Pine Springs, the narrator invites us in his living room, and tells us about how he sees life. He begins by explaining his relationship towards his wife Rosie and his to young teenage daughters Ellen Jean and Martha Kay. It seams that his relationship towards his family is rather special, because he does not trust them at all, “your own flesh and blood, will try to run over you, stomp you, steal from you, kill you if they can.” He especially does not consider much of Ellen Jean who is the oldest, “She’s a sassy bitch-girl and don’t take after her ma or me. Sometimes I wonder if she’s mine.” When she began to wear makeup and got interested in boys, her farther got so scarred of what the boys would to her that he took her out from school – but still he would not be surprised if she was already pregnant. He does not say much about Martha Kay and her mother, other than they are very much like each other, mostly because they both cry a lot. Even though the narrator is married to Rosie, he has a girlfriend in South Town, who Rosie knows all about. Despite the fact that he has another woman in his life, he still cares about Rosie in his own ironical way, “I wouldn’t trade Rosie for her but Rosie don’t know that.”
His opinion about the town and the people that live there, is not very different from what he feels for his family. He does not trust one of them and believes that they are all after his money, “There ain’t a one on earth that wouldn’t try to cheat you if they could.” We learn that there live a lot of black people in the town. Strangely enough the narrator does not have much against them – even though he refers to them in a very inappropriate way (calls them niggers), because he believes that he can handle them. One time he had a little problem with a black person called Ezmo, but he took care of him very quickly by shooting him in the head. Since the narrator lives in a bad neighbourhood, the Sheriff of the town is a leader of an illegal operation, and the police mostly sleep while they are on duty . This is one of reasons for why the narrator is in possession of a gun, because he believes that the law can not be trusted.
We hear that the narrator owns a store where he sells all kind of things like meat, hammers, guns etc. His “relationship” to his store is unlike any other relationship quite good. He is very close to his store and loves almost every thing about it, “My store is about the best thing I know of. It seems like a human being sometimes except a lots better because you can trust it.”
To sum up, the narrator seems to have a problem trusting people seeing that the only one he trusts in the whole world is his store, which even means more to him than his own family – who he by the way does not respect one bit (he has a girl friend). We get the impression that he is a very mean and rood person, considering the way he treats his family.
We also hear that he spend some time in the 1. World War. I believe that this is the main reason for why he has such a negative perspective on life and people, since he experienced such a mean and cruel side of human beings. After the war he unfortunately moved to Pine Springs which obviously is not a very good neighbourhood and because of the time he spend in World War 1 he sees no reason for moving, “What’s the good of moving? People are as mean one place as they are another and they’re always out to get you. They won’t get me because I won’t let them.”
To sum up, the narrator’s negative opinion on people can be caused by his experience in the 1. World War, because he witnessed such a cruel event and than latter moved to a bad town, he begins to lose faith in people and in life.
So, “This Is My Living Room“ – which the title by the way symbolises his home, is about a an American who because of his past (1. World War) sees people as enemies and does not even trust his own family. The only one that matters to him, is his beloved store which he only loves because he knows that he can always count on it!

På forhånd tak

Violence has become a new problem in the world today – especially in America where nearly 1100 people die (EVERY) year (DUE TO) violence – (IN MOST CASES GUNS ARE INVOLVED). In the USA almost every citizen owns a weapon (gun) because they do not trust the police and so they feel that every man has to protect himself from what the future might hold. It is almost unbelievable to (FIND OUT) how much the Americans fear the future and how much this fear has an effect on their lives.

(THE MAIN CHARACTHER IN THE) novel* “This Is My Living Room” is a very good example of what you could call A “typical American”, whose (WORST) fear is the future and the world, which are both (CAPABLE) of taking everything away from him – and for that reason he owns a gun to protect him from this fear.**

In the short story, which takes place in a small town called Pine Springs, the narrator invites us in his living room, and tells us about how he sees life. He begins by explaining his relationship towards his wife Rosie and his (TOWARDS HIS) young teenage daughters Ellen Jean and Martha Kay. It (SEEMS) that his relationship towards his family is rather special because he does not trust them at all, “…your own flesh and blood, will try to run over you, stomp you, steal from you, kill you if they can.”(LINE ??).***
He especially does not consider much of Ellen Jean who is the oldest, (AS THIS QUOTATION PROVES,) “She’s a sassy bitch-girl and don’t take after her ma or me. Sometimes I wonder if she’s mine.”(LINE ??)***. When she began to wear makeup and got interested in boys, her (FATHER) (BECAME)**** so scarred of what the boys would (DO) to her that he took her out from school – but still he would not be surprised if she was already pregnant. He does not say much about Martha Kay and her mother, other than they are very much like each other, mostly because they both cry a lot. Even though the narrator is married to Rosie, he has a girlfriend in South Town, who Rosie knows all about. Despite the fact that he has another woman in his life, he still cares about Rosie in his own ironical way, (THIS QUOTATION ILLUSTRATES THIS) “I wouldn’t trade Rosie for her but Rosie don’t know that.”(LINE ??)***
His opinion about the town and the people that live there is not very different from what he feels for his family. He does not trust (ANY ONE) of them and believes that they (ALL) are after his money, (THIS IS SEEN IN THESE LINES, “There ain’t a one on earth that wouldn’t try to cheat you if they could.”(LINE ??)***. We learn that there (ARE MANY) black people (LIVING) in the town. Strangely enough the narrator does not have much against them – even though he refers to them in a very inappropriate way (calls them niggers), because he believes that he can handle them*****. One time he had a little problem with a black person called Ezmo, but he took care of him very quickly by shooting him in the head. Since the narrator lives in a bad neighbourhood, the Sheriff of the town is a leader of an illegal operation, and the police mostly sleep while they are on duty. This is one of reasons why the narrator is in possession of a gun, because he believes that the law cannot be trusted.
We hear that the narrator owns a store where he sells all kind of things like meat, hammers, guns etc. His “relationship” to his store is quite good unlike any other relationship (HE HAS). “My store is about the best thing I know of. It seems like a human being sometimes except a lots better because you can trust it.” (LINE ??), (THIS PASSAGE SHOWS THAT) he is very close to his store and loves almost every thing about it. The narrator seems to have a problem trusting people seeing that the only one he trusts in the whole world is his store, which even means more to him than his own family – who he by the way does not respect one bit (he has a girl friend). We get the impression that he is a very mean and rood person, considering the way he treats his family.
We also hear that he (WAS A SOLDIER) in the (FIRST) World War. I believe that this is the main reason why he has such a negative perspective on life and people, since he experienced such a (BRUTAL)****** and cruel side of human beings. After the war he unfortunately moved to Pine Springs which obviously (WAS)******* not a very good neighbourhood and because of the time he spend in World War 1 he sees no reason for moving (BECAUSE HE SAYS,) “What’s the good of moving? People are as mean one place as they are another and they’re always out to get you. They won’t get me because I won’t let them.”(LINE ??).
To put it briefly, the narrator’s negative opinion (OF) people can be (THE RESULT OF) his experience in World War 1********, because he witnessed such a cruel event and than (HE) later moved to a (TERRIBLE) town, he (BEGAN) to lose faith in people and in life.
So, “This Is My Living Room“, the title, (WHICH) by the way symbolises his home, is about an American who because of his past (1. World War)******** sees people as enemies and does not even trust his own family. The only (THING) that matters to him is his beloved store which he only loves because he knows that he can always count on it!

Hejsa,

Den hedder "Bowling with Colombine". Se den....

God essay :0)
